It is true that the authorities in many nations have recently imposed higher taxes on sugary groceries. Personally, despite acknowledging the merits of these taxes, I think that the drawbacks are more pronounced.

On the one hand, it is reasonable to believe that introducing taxes to food and beverages with a high level of sugar can offer greater benefits. Apparently, these products can provide consumers with an excessive amount of calories, which requires them to engage in exercises to burn all those excess energy intake and keep fit. Otherwise, these individuals may gain weight, resulting in detrimental health effects such as obesity, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases. Because of that, imposing taxes on sugary groceries can create higher prices that makes these items less appealing to people, diminishing the consumption of sweets. Nevertheless, some people have an entrenched habit of consuming sweet drinks and food, thereby making this method seem implausible as it cannot address this issue immediately and may even create counterproductive problems such as financial burden for these individuals. On the other hand, I am more inclined towards opposing taxes on sugary beverages and food.

This is because there are many factors that can be attributed to the overwhelming consumption of sugar that taxing cannot solely address. For instance, lack of proper education can lead to an unclear perspective about food and drinks’ components, thereby developing poor dietary habits. Another compelling reason is the significant demands of sugar. This ingredient appears in many dishes around the world, and the energy it offers to consumers far outweighs its initial price, making it the most suitable supply for most families, especially low-income ones. As a consequence, when taxes are imposed on sugary products, it can cause regressive taxes that disproportionately affect disadvantaged individuals who allocate a large share to these basic groceries. In conclusion, although imposing taxes on sugary groceries may offer certain advantages such as hampering the consumption of sweets, I believe that its drawbacks are far more pronounced due to its negative effects on individuals with low financial resources.
