Traffic problems are increasing in many urban areas. Some people believe that cities should focus on developing public transport rather than building more roads for private cars.
I completely agree with this view. Firstly, spending more money on public transport can help cities deal with traffic problems more effectively. If buses and trains are frequent, affordable and comfortable, many people will choose them instead of driving their own cars. This reduces the number of vehicles on the roads, which means less traffic, especially at busy times of the day. Moreover, public transport is generally better for the environment because one bus or train can carry many passengers at once.
As a result, fewer cars are used and less pollution is produced. For this reason, improving public transport is a practical way to make cities less crowded and more environmentally friendly. Secondly, investing in public transport is more beneficial for society and the economy than building new roads for cars. Not everyone can afford a private vehicle, especially students, elderly people and low-income families. Public transport allows these groups to travel easily and at a lower cost. In contrast, constructing new roads is extremely expensive and often only provides a temporary solution to traffic problems.
When more roads are built, more people are encouraged to drive, which can increase congestion again. Therefore, focusing on public transport is a more sustainable and fair approach that supports economic growth while improving the quality of life in cities.
